EDUCATIONAL TRIP "BUILDERS OF CATHEDRALS: THE CATHEDRAL OF MILAN" - FREUD SCHOOL

14 maggio 2018

On May 22, 2018, all students in Classes 1^A and 1^B of the S. Freud School's Information Technology Technical Address will participate in the traveling educational outing "Builders of Cathedrals: the Milan Cathedral," from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

CONTENTS

Piazza del Duomo is the heart of Milan. Here stands the imposing monument, symbol of the city. With its forest of spires, the cathedral invites us to look upward, and it is precisely this momentum toward the sky that has always characterized Milan, allowing it, over time, to respond to its vocation: to be a crossroads - Mediolanum - of peoples and cultures. The educational outing has been planned with multiple objectives, including, for example, to make it evident of how the Milan Cathedral is the result of a collaborative effort among Milanese citizens: each one, attracted by the grandeur and beauty of the purpose, was able to donate not only money, but days of work, personal goods, ideas, planning, to help in the construction, to participate in the realization of the symbol of the city.

In addition, the visit will be an opportunity to delve into the history of the construction of the Duomo, which, since 1386, the year of its foundation, has involved workers who, coming from the different territories of the Italian peninsula, but also from central and northern Europe, have given the building site an international, unmistakable and unique imprint. The history of the route of the marbles used for its construction, and arrived in the center of Milan through the dense network of canals and canals, now hidden by paved roads, also helps to tell and trace a historical "map" (as much as contemporary, invisible but still present in the city today.

To visit Milan Cathedral is to have a unique and unparalleled experience.

We will enter its wide and soaring aisles, observing the symbolic Gothic forest of its fifty-two pillars, the colorful stained glass windows that adorn its walls, finally ranging our gaze in the many directions to wto which the many architectural elements invite us. This experience means experiencing another space, infinitely large and surprising, rich in events and happenings that have marked the history of Milan.

No less enthralling will be to descend into the archaeological area, where the remains of the ancient buildings that preceded the building of the Duomo are located: the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, and the Basilica of Santa Tecla, dating back to the fourth century.

Then climbing up to the terraces of the Duomo will offer students the opportunity for a path full of suggestions: from the panorama of the city to views of the sky.

The centrality of the Madonnina del Duomo, for centuries the highest point of the city, symbol and synthesis of Milan, is also recognized by modern skyscrapers, on the tops of which are placed small-scale copies of the statue of Mary, which thus continues to this day to dominate and protect the Milanese capital

The educational trip was planned thanks to the support of Gibart, which, in discussion with the teachers, imagined a 4-hour tour led by an experienced, licensed guide.
