IL GIORNO-CLOSED NUMBER? IS ABSURD AS WELL AS USELESS-- DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

Dr.Nappo in this article, in addressing the thorny issue of the closed number for different courses of study that have many university faculties,explains the reasons for his disagreement with this choice.

The absurdity of numerus clausus in the university could be demonstrated, to give just one example, by the fact that since it was introduced in 1983 in the Faculty of Medicine and gradually in the nursing professions courses, the result is that there is a shortage of tens of thousands of doctors.
Thus, one could speak of a very serious miscalculation between the need of the mythical "market"-the demand for tens of thousands of qualified professionals-and dullness in the scheduling of access to study. Of "barony" of the profession, of a mistaken culture that believes that closed number guarantees better preparation, of a very strong cut in investment in the university passed off as a more efficient organization.

All true, but not enough. The error is precisely inherent in the closed number among other things extended to many humanities faculties.Over the years, international and national studies have been carried out that show that graduates of a faculty are not able per se to pass the entrance tests of their own course of study. Many times, then, the absurdity of test questions has been denounced. Let us come to the point. It is the very logic of the selection mode that is absurd.
Normally, a student should be able to take courses in a subject, study the topics in depth, fill in their gaps, enhance their previous and acquired knowledge, have adequate time for preparation, and check what they have learned on exams where it is fair for them to pass or fail. How he knows the various subjects without being taught them is incomprehensible. Opposition to closed number is therefore not ideological but technical.In conclusion, I think it is interesting to recall the "advertisement" of a university which claimed, years ago, that within a few months of graduation most of its former students would be hired. An analysis by a faculty at another university claimed, to the contrary, that 50 percent of graduates were employed in family-owned businesses and that 40 percent belonged to upper classes in terms of census, education, position and relationships. The remaining 10% employed the same amount of time as any other university to find employment. It is hard to know for sure which of the two universities was right, but it is interesting food for thought and analysis.
