IL GIORNO-DIGITAL EDUCATION BUT SMARTPHONES OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM-DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

21 ottobre 2022

This article offers us a useful reflection not to demonize in toto the use of cell phones in School, but rather to enhance their conscious and profitable use for educational purposes.

In Italy each Institute has its own regulations, but Directive 104 of 2007 is clear: smartphones are not allowed in the classroom. It is one of the rules present in any co-responsibility pact that is signed by parents and teachers at the beginning of the year, cell phones must be turned off before entering school and cannot be turned on. The reference standard in question is Ministerial Directive 104 of Nov. 30, 2007: "From the list of general duties set forth in Article 3 of Presidential Decree No. 249/1998, it is clear that there is a specific duty for each student not to use cell phones, or other electronic devices, during the course of educational activities (...)." In practice, the directive does not prohibit bringing a cell phone to school, as long as it is kept off during classes and is not used in the buildings to take photos, make videos or violate the privacy of those present.

Each institution has its own regulations with more or less stringent measures that, therefore, may vary from school to school even going as far as the withdrawal of smartphones before class. Attention must be ensured for students in educational activities; the classroom setting must foster socialization and address and combat smartphone addiction; only in the event that the teacher, during class and for educational purposes only, deems it appropriate for students to use their cell phones may have them used.
Schools and young people after years of pandemic, with distance learning, have truly understood how important presence and relationship is; girls and boys in the classroom should not waste their time on their cell phones, which should not be confused with the digitization of school.

Teenagers incur many worrisome risks by spending many hours on their phones. It is therefore necessary, particularly at school,
promote a conscious use of technologies and in line with educational needs. Receiving text messages, distracting oneself under the desk, leads to deconcentration and withdrawal from the present moment. Conversely, greater concentration has results and consequent benefits on school performance. The problem is not to remove technology from school, but to use the tools legitimately as useful 'tools' for teachers that can enhance learning. The use of the smartphone in this sense is a push toward innovation because it is .a device with which it is possible to revolutionize the organization of teaching.
