Language Internship to London s.y. 2013-2014 - Istituto Freud

Study Trip to London

The destination of the Study Trip - Language Internship - of the 2013-2014 school year was London, the "metropolis" par excellence of Europe.

The experience was of great impact for all participating students, who immersed themselves in the dynamism of a city of many stimuli and opportunities.

The formula chosen for the stay was an overnight stay with a host family and participation in the morning in English language classes at the prestigious "ISIS School on Oxford Street," which has recently undergone an intergral renovation and is equipped with all the most technological equipment to ensure multimedia lessons and encourage L2 learning.

The strategic location of the School, situated in the heart of London, also enabled the students to immediately fit into the context of City life and was the starting point for visiting the city's main attractions, including Buckingham Palace, the National Gallery, Westminster and many others!

Trip participants returned enthusiastic about the experience, strongly united by the friendships consilidated or just created in the British capital!

Below are the memories of two chaperones, Prof. Antonella Campisi and Dr. Sara Calvitto.

"Our Trip to London" - Memories of a Teacher

"A memorable experience as a teacher and as a chaperone. As much as people think and say that the people of northern Europe are "cold," our arrival in London proved otherwise; waiting for us were the families, very caring and helpful to our pupils who were their guests for a week. They welcomed us into their homes, made sure that our children became part of their everyday life for a few days, immersing themselves in their customs and traditions, discovering them and getting to know them closely.

The well-organized and highly professional "ISIS School of Oxford Street" planned an initial test in order to establish the level of each pupil so that they could work in groups. The lessons were engaging and dynamic.

London is a vibrant and eclectic city that exudes culture in all its forms; there is never a dull moment, an air of absolute contemporaneity. The hub of London life is the City of Westminster, main cultural district not to mention Covent Garden at tea time is not to be missed. Rich in parks and museums mostly free of charge, among which we visited the National Gallery with works by masters such as Van Gogh, da Vinci, Botticelli and the Science Museum with the most important scientific discoveries of the last 300 years.

We could not miss a ride on London Eye, the highest Ferris wheel in the world, a breathtaking experience that gave us unforgettable views; to conclude, we did not miss a visit to the gigantic stadium of Arsenal FC where our boys were able to indulge in photos in the luxurious areas dedicated to soccer players."- Antonella Campisi-

BOARD DIARY "Our Trip to London"

"Sunday, March 30: departure from Milan-Linate airport on a British Airways flight at 7:55 a.m. and arrival at 8:55 a.m. local time. The company consists of 42 students attending the five classes of the S. Freud Institute and the three chaperones Prof. Teresa Capuano, Prof. Campisi Antonella, Dr. Sara Calvitto. Upon arrival, students are picked up by their individual host families at the Sudbury Town subway station and taken to eat their first English meal with their families. In the afternoon, college guides organize a short tour including central London, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, and the gardens around the royal palace where the students can photograph and admire squirrels, mallards and ducklings.

Monday, March 31: In the morning, students go to the college, at ISIS School on Oxford Street, to take the placement test and are sorted into individual classes according to their grade level. The morning runs smoothly, the students are interested in the lessons and take an active part in the educational activities. In the afternoon we visit the British Museum, one of the most important history museums in the world, with pavilions devoted to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Orient. Much admired and photographed by the children is the Rosetta Stone. The visit lasts about two and a half hours, and at the end the students join their families.

Tuesday, April 1: In the morning, activities resume at the college until 12:30 pm. The afternoon begins with a visit to London's skyscrapers. These include The Shard London Bridge ("The Splinter"), London's newest skyscraper opened in 2012 and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. The second skyscraper visited is the St. Mary Axe ("The Gherkin") sixth tallest skyscraper in London. The visit continues to St. Paul's Cathedral and the Covent Garden market, where the students go shopping and sample local products.

Wednesday, April 2: After college classes, the schoolchildren head to London's Ferris wheel, "London Eye," for an excursion organized in collaboration with the local school. At the top of the wheel, it is possible to see London up to 40 kilometers away. The sightseeing tour lasts 40 minutes, at the end of which the teachers organize a walk along the Thames River, and a tour (outdoors) of London's most important monuments: Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament.

Thursday, April 3: After college classes, students visit the National Gallery, one of the most important museums in the world, with collections of such great authors as Van Gogh, Cezanne, Michelangelo, Canaletto, Caravaggio. Among them particularly admired the painting " Sunflowers" by Van Gogh. The visit ends after two and a half hours. On the way out, students admire Trafalgar Square, the London square dedicated to the Battle of Trafalgar in which national hero Horatio Nelson defeated France and England during the Napoleonic Wars.

Friday, April 4: After college classes, students travel to Emirates Stadium, where the Arsenal team plays. The students like the visit very much, as they get to see the stadium, the locker rooms, the infirmary, the press box, and even enter the field and sit in the directors' box.  As agreed with the teachers, an evening is organized at the Hard Rock Café, with a typical English menu: cheeseburgers and fries. The children reach their homes around 9:30 in the evening.

Saturday, April 5: The morning is left free for the students to pack their bags, buy the last things and have lunch with their families. In the afternoon, the schoolchildren gather to reach London Heathrow Airport where they await the British Aiways flight that will take them back to Italy at about 9:30 p.m." -Sara Calvitto-
