SCIENCES

CLASS I

PURPOSE

To promote understanding of the dynamism of planet Earth and the role humans must play in maintaining the balance between nature's resources and human intervention.
To practice observation and description of natural phenomena.
Develop the ability to recognize the relationships between earth sciences and other scientific disciplines.

GOALS
Solicit expression through increasingly clear, precise and scientific language.
Use acquired knowledge of lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere to set terms of environmental problems on a rational basis.
Correctly identify, in the examination of complex phenomena, the essential variables, their role and mutual relationships.

MAIN TOPICS COVERED
The earth as a celestial body: earth's movements and their consequences; the moon, a satellite of the earth.
Fundamentals of astronomy: the Universe, celestial bodies, The Solar System.
Lithosphere: minerals, rocks and their classification.
Earth's Internal Energy: volcanism, seismicity, plate tectonics theory.
Fossils and the earth's past: processes of fossilization, mention of the Geological Ages.
Atmosphere and climate: structure and composition of the atmosphere, general circulation of the atmosphere.
Hydrosphere: the oceans, lakes and glaciers, sea motions.

CLASS II

PURPOSE

To promote understanding of the unity of the world of living things, manifested through their constitution and common evolutionary history. To gain awareness of the importance of natural balances in relation to the quality of life.
To stimulate the adoption of lifestyles that reduce the risk of disease and promote individual well-being and respect for the environment.

GOALS
Recognize the processes of continuous transformation inherent in all living organisms, in terms of metabolism and development.
Detect, describe, and explain the fundamental characteristics of living things at different levels: organic molecules, the cell, the human body, ecosystems.
Solicit expression through increasingly clear, precise and scientific language.

MAIN TOPICS COVERED
The environment as a complex system: ecosystems, the recycling of matter-biogeochemical cycles, the characteristics of living things and the origin of life.
The energy cell and life: organic molecules, the cell structure, function, energy metabolism and reproduction.
Multicellular organisms and their reproduction: animal tissues and apparatus, reproduction of multicellular organisms, human reproductive system.
Genetics: the transmission of hereditary traits; Mendel's Laws.
Evolutionary theory: precursors of Darwin, Darwin's theory: evolution by natural selection.
Physiology and anatomy of the human body: digestive system and nutrition; circulatory, respiratory, skeletal muscle, endocrine system.
