MILAN, APR 15 - In the United States, in the first six months of 2021, due to covids and lock-downs, psychiatric hospitals report a 45 percent increase in the number of cases of self-harm and suicide attempts up to age 17 compared to the same period in 2020. In Italy, the National Council of the Order of Psychologists (Cnop), last October in a report, with responses from 5,621 specialists, notes that patients in treatment under the age of 18 have increased by 31 percent. This is the summary of a focus of the Freud Higher Institute in Milan aimed at addressing students' problems appropriately. "The signs are strong, anxiety, depression, self-harm, after these two years of pandemic, we need to intercept the general discomfort," explains director Daniele Nappo. "With the post-pandemic, young people are fighting a very complex period and condition of their lives, with relapsing repercussions for their mental health; unfortunately, psychological support, prevention and listening was little talked about before and is still little talked about today. The signs of widespread deterioration are clear and shared but the alarm seems to be unheard." The pandemic has produced a general decline in the mental health of boys and girls, with consequences for all adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18," the analysis points out.Those who had no worries have had to face phases of bewilderment and discomfort due to limitations in sociality; for those who were already in a critical condition, the chances of seeking support have diminished; and for the social-health system, the risk of not being able to intercept and in part even manage requests for help has increased. Hospitals throughout Italy were forced to increase beds in child neuropsychiatry wards to receive more people than ever before in recent years.
