Nappo (Freud Institute), support and empathy are the key words
(ANSA) - MILAN, FEB 11 - After Distance Learning, recovery proved problematic: students stayed at home, away from school for a long time, sometimes months, and something in them changed. Loneliness, disorientation, anxiety appeared.
Based on these findings, the Freud High School in Milan, implemented the 'Emotions' project for young people to interact with each other by becoming 'protagonists' again.
"We need to teach them to be courageous and to use conversation as an overtaking tool to overcome the situation," explains Daniele Nappo, the educational director, "so support and empathy are the key words, welcoming and understanding the signals of frustration that they are communicating at this time; it is very important that they understand that you can talk to their teachers and that they can get relief through the 'validation' of their emotions.
Based on a focus on figuring out how to act, the 750-plus enrolled school observed that "objectively something in the children has changed." Forced isolation and lack of social relationships has resulted in - an aspect noted when classes resume - a significant drop in mood.
Among the signs of criticality caused by the change in everyday life: sleep problems and repeated waking up at night, causing attention difficulties, stress and nervousness.
Students feel "transported into unproductive circles not suitable for their well-being."
"The project, defined together with the school psychologist, and teachers," Nappo concludes, "therefore aims at awareness: taking an interest and being close to students is a valuable opportunity to get in touch with the emotions of others and learn through mirroring and sharing, to observe and understand without judging because there are no wrong emotions: so if a boy is sad, no matter the reason, whether shareable or not, one must focus on his sadness.
