CONTENTS

Andra and Tatiana Bucci, born Alessandra and Liliana, are two sisters of Jewish descent who managed to survive the Nazi Holocaust. As children, in fact, they were deported to Auschwitz together with their cousin Sergio De Simone. The two women were both born in Rijeka: Tatiana on September 19, 1937, while Andra on July 1, 1939, and were 84 and 82 years old, respectively. Their father Giovanni Bucci was Catholic while their mother Mira Perlow, originally from Belarus, was Jewish. She had moved to Rijeka with her family in the early 1900s to escape the Czarist pogroms but the problem came up again when the German racial laws were applied in Rijeka on September 8, 1943, and the Jewish community began to be deported to concentration camps. On March 28, 1944, at the ages of 4 and 6, Andra and Tatiana were arrested along with their mother, cousin Sergio and other relatives. Taken first to the Risiera di San Saba for interrogation, on the night of April 4, 1944, they arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau. At Auschwitz, Andra and Tatiana Bucci were mistaken for twins and kept alive in the Kinderblock to be subjected to Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments. Even today, the two women are among the most important witnesses to what happened in the concentration camp during World War II. According to the laws of Auschwitz, they were supposed to die as it was stipulated that women with children and those over 60 and under 15 years of age were to be killed.
