BIBLIOBUS PROJECT - TRAVELING LIBRARIES IN MILAN
Reading is a pleasure, all to be discovered and cultivated, an activity that makes our lifestyle more pleasant and sustainable. In fact, according to recent studies, reading has a positive impact in our brains, an area decisive for the quality of our lives, producing a kind of wave-like movement, similar to a gentle massage.
Reading has a beneficial influence in the way we manage our sociality since it increases empathy and the ability to relate to others; it is also adapted to control anxiety and mood disorders and is effective in combating the tendency to isolation of many of us who seek ephemeral "refuge" in the compulsive use of tablets and cell phones.
Reading, in fact, opens to the infinite richness of all forms of knowledge, stimulates imagination, feelings and emotions allowing us to identify with the plot of the novel we are reading or with the protagonists who populate the "character system" of the story.
Crucially, reading should be an activity open to all without economic restrictions.
In Victorian-era England, the establishment of circulating libraries-whose more apt translation is "circulating and popular libraries"-guaranteed the free lending of novels and/or periodicals to all sections of the population.
Even nowadays, in order to meet the needs of all those people who enjoy reading but do not have the time or availability to go to bookstores or public libraries, the Bibliobus Project has been active in the city of Milan since 1984, a traveling library that seeks to bring people back to reading by reaching them directly at their doorstep, offering books of all narrative genres for loan. The Bibliobus is a spacious and welcoming place for reading. In fact, the service has evolved over the years with several vehicles of increasing comfort and capacity.
Consider that in 2000 a new and modern Bibliobus was purchased that offers more space than its predecessors, being equipped with air conditioning-during the summer season-comfortable seats and greater convenience in using the shelves to consult.
The Bibliobus is a citizen-friendly service as it periodically travels to the most densely populated areas of the city but lacking a municipal library or cultural center.
It is very easy to join this fascinating project. You need an ID and residence in Italy, and you can apply for a membership card, which is free and valid on the Bibliobus as in all other libraries of the Milan Municipal System. The duration of the loan is 30 days. Also, if the work you are looking for is not available, you can reserve it and it will be delivered with the next round.
