Today, society requires us to be aware digital citizens, i.e. in possession of what we need to face the daily changes that digital technologies offer us. In this article, Dr. Daniele Nappo illustrates the importance of digital education for an effective transition.
Over time, technology has become an integral part of our society. Today, every field, both professional and private, moves thanks mainly to the technological advances of recent years. Everything revolves, therefore, around technology and in particular the internet. The school needs to focus its efforts on enabling students to learn how to design and process with digital skills and abilities. Opportunities arise for young people and the economy on a daily basis: preparing and equipping them with knowledge enables them to successfully cope with the changes and metamorphosis of the labour market and to participate fully in society and democracy. Schools must leave no one behind: the recovery of our country passes through the transition to digital, which begins behind the desks with an investment that must make it possible to achieve the goal fairly. And in fact, digital education aims precisely to ensure that everyone understands all those technological and cultural tools necessary to live this transformation to the fullest. A student today will be a workforce tomorrow if equipped, as mentioned, with the required skills while also contributing to sustainable growth, increasing innovation and improving the competitiveness of companies
Unfortunately, more than three-quarters of EU companies are currently struggling to find workers with the necessary skills, and the latest data from Eurostat indicate that only 37% are in the habit of undergoing the necessary training; School must be a valid support for the adults of tomorrow to have those basic digital skills and proposals must be adopted with the aim of filling this demand. The management of digital life, such as paying bills, applying for a parking permit or whatever, requires that there is specific knowledge on the part of citizens. Building solutions that benefit and support society with technologies that help us in our daily lives requires this. Now is the time to act. It is necessary to set up real courses and as many disciplines that include digital training activities. This is also important for achieving the target of an employment rate of at least 78% by 2030. It is becoming increasingly important to approach this infinite universe of possibilities and opportunities in the right way
Nowadays every day we use the Internet, via PC or smartphone, and we use the information available in it and in turn we produce content that can be used by others. This dual aspect, as creators and users of information, requires us to be aware digital citizens, i.e. in possession of what is needed to deal with the daily changes that digital technologies offer us. Achieving a new skill is never easy, nor is it immediate, especially if you have a certain reluctance to change. Until now, unfortunately, we have learned independently and based only on observing the behavior of others or consulting the Internet. It can no longer be enough.
