On Friday 17 December Dr. Daniele Nappo, legal representative of the S. Freud Charter School, exposes his reflections on the courage to teach emotional education in the “Piazza Lombardia” column of the national newspaper “Il Giorno”.
The sociologist argues that we are in a moment of educational emergency as pupils often express their feelings of anger by venting them on peers and classmates. Every teenager must be made to understand that his own emotionality is important and that the analysis of it is fundamental, in this the teacher plays a fundamental role who, having a strong emotional intelligence, acts as a facilitator of the boy's self-analysis, helping him to go through the moments of most extreme fragility. Logically, it is also hoped for a bill that will allow schools to have the opportunity to have funds to be able to start various projects to be included within the school curricula.
"In recent years we have been witnessing more and more violence with teenagers as protagonists: we can say that we are in a real educational emergency, amplified and increased by the closure due to the pandemic. Probably every day is marked by significant aggressive attitudes of children who express real violent attitudes towards peers. The solution cannot be the only punitive measure, but real training courses must be structured in schools that educate the new generations about emotions, values and affectivity. We know how much feelings participate in an important way in the process of knowledge, so much so that it would be useful to intervene, with extreme need, to restore the right dignity to knowledge. The emotional intelligence that characterizes a teacher constitutes a fundamental and significant role in the creation of the training and growth path of each child. The real meaning of education, the profound one, is education in basic values and feelings, first of all, to make students aware, responsible: the actions and behaviors assumed are the consequence.
Every teenager must be made to understand that one must have respect for one's emotional life, which must also be identified and welcomed by others. This process of maturation is important so that each of them is able to understand what it means to take care of diversity. The real challenge of the new school is this: to combine emotional skills with cognitive ones; today's school cannot ignore this important aspect. Competences are the ability to consciously and effectively use knowledge and predispositions, passions, skills in relation to the context. The modern school has the tools to support a corresponding affective and relational maturation, teaching rights and duties.
Today's school puts in place and prepares the tools for raising awareness, education in affectivity and the battle against models in the educational field. The school is therefore entrusted with the task and the ability to initiate specific courses on citizenship education. We certainly hope for a bill that requires all schools to address the issue in its complexity, within the school curricula. We must start from here, today's school has and must have the courage and the ability to educate to feelings."
