The Legal Representative and founder of the S. Freud School, Dr. Daniele Nappo, deals with the topic of self-esteem, which is fundamental for the success and personal growth of a child but which must not result in the idea of success at all costs which, on the other hand, is dangerous since it is based on the assumption that failure is a failure leading to what is called "performance anxiety".
Helping a student with low self-esteem is an important need for every parent. Self-esteem, from a purely educational point of view, is recognized as a relevant principle for success and personal growth and, consequently, having a student who lacks it is a cause for concern for a teacher. The idea of success at all costs is very dangerous because it is based on the belief that failure constitutes a digression from the ordinary course of things, necessarily due to some form of self-esteem, self-impediment or depression. This approach generates in students what is commonly referred to as performance anxiety. From this point of view, it should not be thought that the improvement of students' self-esteem is the right device to ensure them a life full of success. The correct conception starts from a very different point of view, in which each individual has the potential to build a happy and full life. The achievement of the goals we will achieve along the way, however, as well as the failures we will achieve are not caused solely by our way of being or acting. Our value does not depend on the more or less high results we obtain. As people, we move in a dense web of relationships between events and people, and we are only one factor in the complicated equation that determines the course of things. The teacher must help the student to accept that not everything, and not always, can go as we prefer. Young people need to be helped to become autonomous and balanced people, able to live their lives peacefully, building relationships. Training students with a good level of self-esteem is important to teach them to face life's events with courage and determination. The important thing is not to succeed at all costs, but to try at all costs without fear.
