Dr. Daniele Nappo, Legal Representative and Founder of the S. Freud Private School draws attention to the changing role of the school where theoretical notions and technical skills are no longer learned. Schools must invest in the teaching of empathy and stress management that contribute to a better quality of individual life but also to a healthier and more supportive society.
Today's schools are no longer just places where theoretical notions and technical skills are learned, but are evolving into spaces dedicated to the complete formation of the individual. Among the new educational priorities, empathy and stress management are emerging more and more clearly: two fundamental skills to face the challenges of the modern world. Empathy, the ability to understand and participate in the feelings of others, is a necessary social skill. In an age where virtual communication often prevails over direct communication, it is more crucial than ever to teach young people to put themselves in the shoes of others, to listen without judgement. Stress is one of the greatest challenges facing adolescents. Between school pressures, family expectations and social media influences, many young people struggle with anxiety and insecurities from an early age. Schools already experimenting with these subjects offer hands-on, interactive activities such as ‘Empathy Workshops’ where students participate in role-plays and discussions to relate to different perspectives. Mindfulness sessions teaching relaxation and self-awareness techniques. Emotional education, with lessons dedicated to recognising and managing emotions such as anger, sadness or joy. These topics can be complemented in traditional subjects such as civics or science, or offered as extracurricular activities. Investing in the teaching of empathy and stress management brings benefits beyond the school context. These skills not only improve the individual's quality of life, but also contribute to a healthier and more supportive society. A school that puts the individual at the centre is a school that truly prepares for tomorrow.
