Dr. Daniele Nappo - Legal Representative and Founder of the S. Freud Private School - addresses the topic of podcasts and their rise in popularity among Italian students during the lockdown, offering educational opportunities to improve speaking skills. Creating podcasts in the classroom can engage students and promote positive use of new technologies.
The podcast phenomenon exploded in the United States in the late 1990s and early 2000s, thanks to the expansion of cheaper recording technologies and the opportunity to share content via theInternet. It is certainly a new communicative channel with which to stimulate even students through rhythmic and engaging audio content, and there is a strong growth in their use in Italy as well: the topics addressed start from the topics provided in the school curriculum to bring young listeners to learn, to deepen and to reflect. It is in fact one of the biggest and most important innovations in communication and schooling.
The podcast has been of interest to young people during the lockdown period; more and more pupils are in the habit of putting on headphones and listening to their favorite programs. Therefore, it is good to take advantage of this resource that teenagers like at school and experiment with creating audio content as activities that can be incorporated into the curriculum. The creation of podcasts would thus allow students to practice the use of oral, improve their diction, and enable them to be more confident with exposition while learning, above all, how to govern their emotions and emotionality. Certainly students would feel motivated and interested, by virtue of their predisposition to the use of new technologies, and teachers could educate them in the positive and effective use of them. To make a podcast you need original ideas and topics to come up with, you first need to write the texts and then perform them live with the coordination of a director, all the students who are part of it should feel like protagonists, like in a newspaper editorial office. The school can and should use this tool as a channel for inclusive teaching, certainly it is a challenging activity that can challenge everyone's abilities.
