IL GIORNO- OUR IDEAS FOR A MIDDLE SCHOOL REFORM - DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

10 marzo 2023

The Legal Representative Dr. Daniele Nappo in his article makes a reflection on how the middle school should be refounded and reorganized since it fails to put students in a position to face the first years of high school with peace of mind by proposing a series of initiatives aimed at making the transition from junior high school to senior high school less difficult by helping, moreover, students understand what they want to do once they finish their studies.

The transition from junior high school to high school is an uncertain time that, if not carefully screened, is likely to increase school dropout i.e., dropout. Middle school needs to be refounded and reorganized pooché today it is not connected with high school and does not put one in a position to face the first years with peace of mind. On the contrary, it is often the cause of unevenness that remains as a spillover of the choice of address.
The time has come to do a thorough reflection on the elementary and middle school cycle. It could be hypothesized that middle school would be reduced to two years and one year of high school could be the same for everyone, as an alignment of a school curriculum that would include six years.

Failure rates in the first years of high school should not be underestimated: we are talking about 8 percent out of about 40 thousand students. Obviously, even on school choice and therefore on orientation activities we should intervene, and it seems that the new Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, is thinking about it by introducing hours dedicated to orientation. School has to prepare for future life and so it has to look a bit like reality with eight hours of work perhaps divided between morning and afternoon, with no commitments at home, which could be divided between humanities subjects in the morning and technical-scientific ones with laboratories in the afternoon. Certainly the change of the school goes through a greater selection of teachers; classes could be formed by subject and not by section, somewhat like how the university is organized. Classes could thus be reforumulated by test for skills attained; a priori flunking should be ruled out, leaving only, in modular teaching, the review and examination in September of modules not passed. Percentage grading could be introduced.
