The new name given to the Ministry of Education, with the addition of "and Merit", is a surprise.
Until 2001 it was called the Ministry of Education, then the Ministry of Education and today it changes again.
What does merit imply? Is it really necessary to play with words? Over the years, there has also been a division between the Ministry of University and Education and then its reconstitution in 2008, and then a new division in 2020.
What we like is the word "merit" which we hope implies "deserving" referring to teachers, hoping that it will give back to the school the space and attention it should have. Schools need to have quality teachers: you have to access the chair by value, not by seniority or competitions or worse by call without even the qualifying qualifications. The school must adapt to technical and technological knowledge, no longer just conceptual. It is necessary to look to the future with new skills, both specific to the teaching of the discipline, and behavioral skills in the management of the class group and educational needs, as well as the ability to grasp the uniqueness of each student as a resource with which to build a comparison. Reference people, expert personnel, digital and project management are essential.
Merit must be experienced by both the teacher and the student.
School must return to being that fundamental area of personal growth, so that society puts young people in the condition of having to be prepared and predisposed to sudden changes. Today it is important to engage in a course of study and training that is an added value to the personal one; Today's young people are curious and know how to deepen the issues that interest them: they can build the future day after day in a dynamic way, so they will be able to reap the right fruits of their commitment.
Schools will change the letterhead: hopefully the word merit will not be interpreted and understood from school to school differently. There must be no misunderstandings: it must be well defined and it must not be forgotten that the school is the home of each and every one, so that in this environment the best part of each student can emerge. The school is the first educational agency after the family: it is from here that we must open up and see the future of life, because today's children are talented, have attitudes and sensitivity even if obviously in a different way from each other.
