IL GIORNO – FROM THE ABSOLUTE POWER TO THE TEACHER ON THE HOT SEAT – DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

1 aprile 2022

On Friday 1 April 2022 in the national newspaper “Il Giorno” the legal representative of the Sigmund Freud Charter School of Milan, dr. Daniele Nappo, illustrates his reflections on the relationship between student-teacher. Unlike what happened in the "old school", today the student-teacher relationship is cultivated daily, also giving positive references both to families and to educational institutions, thus allowing children to mature and grow thanks to the support of the guides they find within the school walls. However, this has sometimes led to questioning the figure of the teacher, which is not only wrong, but not very productive: respect must be bilateral and present on both sides.

The school has considerably changed its way of being over the years. Our grandparents tell us that their teachers used a very particular tactic to punish the most unruly pupils: beaten on the hands and kneeling behind the blackboard, the pupils obeyed like toy soldiers. In the old school there was no possibility for families to reply; indeed, usually, the parents said that the teacher was always right. The relationship between teachers and students was cold and detached, the only punishments existed which were the celebration of this authority and were sometimes corporal.

With the reforms also change the regulations and from being very rigid within the institutions, they become less harsh, corporal punishment disappears and the parents begin to have a say and gain importance within the school: This step returns positive feedback, because it allows families to understand what happens to their children; the pupils no longer have the terror of the teacher and dialogue allows them to enter the world of school in a progressive way. With the introduction of the English language from the first year of elementary school there is a useful change because it allows you to get to middle school and later to high school more prepared. With the introduction of the first class councils and the first confrontation meetings, a parent is elected as the class representative. Teachers no longer have absolute power and people are starting to think about introducing new rules for pupils. From the 1980s onwards, the parent feels autonomous, he feels he can tell the teacher how and what to teach, what to do, and even intervenes with a strong, decisive and intrusive attitude in defense of the child. All of this had its downsides. Certainly there has been a change of roles since the parents began to gain power. And it was certainly a wrong consequence, which over the years has degenerated up to the present day because it has totally changed the role of the teacher. We have gone from a completely authoritarian and indisputable figure to a questioned figure, who is struggling to get respected. We can affirm that there have been some positive changes, that many things still have to change and that nevertheless we must realize that we can only improve more and more by following the path of mutual respect for roles.
