IL GIORNO - 2022 ITALIAN FINAL EXAM AT POST COVID TIMES - DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

17 giugno 2022

22 June marks the start of the Post COVID school-leaving examination and marks the end of a crucial phase in the lives of many girls and boys. The maturity exam is the most important moment in every student's school career and should be approached with serenity. The national daily newspaper 'IL GIORNO' published today the reflection of Dr. Daniele Nappo, legal representative of the School S.FREUD in Milan.

"Unlike the examinations of the past two years, which in the midst of the health emergency were marked by a single oral test, the 2022 Matura of the post-Covid era is kicking off for around 540 thousand students on 22 June. The 6 commissioners, as in 2021, will all be internal except for the president, who is external and appointed by the regional school office.

There are three tests, two written and one oral. The Italian subject will be the same for all: seven tracks will be proposed by the Ministry of Education from which one can be chosen; the second test will be on the subjects of address and will not be ministerial. The examination will be all in the presence of the teacher, and only for the interview will there be the possibility of videoconferencing for candidates unable to leave their homes. Civic education skills will then be examined and the hours of the Pcto (school-to-work alternance) projects will have to be accounted for. The grade is always in hundredths; school credit is awarded for a maximum total of 50 points for the final three-year course and 50 for the exams. Those who obtain a mark of 100/100 can aspire to honours, which will be awarded unanimously by the commission.

The Covid has forced questions and controversy about many things: among them the State Examination, more commonly known as the Maturità. Should it have been or could it have been organised differently this year? How? Even for some it was an opportunity to no longer consider it fundamental and go as far as to abolish it. Whether it is an educational value rather than an end-of-school-cycle ritual, the majority still considers it right and a value for students.

Taking the baccalaureate exam in post-coronavirus time is not an easy experience, those who work in schools know full well that this exam marks the end of an important phase in the lives of so many girls and boys, and certainly everyone would have liked to face it and imagine it differently.

Two years or so of the pandemic have disrupted every aspect of our lives and the school has paid one of the highest prices. Many high-school seniors are still confused and frightened, they come from months of different teaching and taking this test calmly will not be easy, even psychologically. A new adventure, this is how students experience it in a time of uncertainty, in a different way of doing school that is sometimes difficult, where the transformations and new habits have built up a conviction in the final year students that it will be unique, which does not mean more difficult or easier. What can only be a symbolic passage wanted to be experienced as it is in its nature, an examination.

The teachers in these two years have had to develop an important job: they have tried to move towards the needs of the young people, but it cannot be forgotten that distance from the school, from the relationship with the teachers themselves, and isolation have had significant consequences with impacts on motivation, self-confidence, and the confidence to relate.

Sometimes, however, a difficulty can create an opportunity. Hopefully, the time has come to put the school and the students back at the centre and to be able to listen to their needs, their requirements, based on the difficulties they have encountered. The Maturity Examination is the most important moment in every student's school career, for almost a century: the school must give as much support as possible. The Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi, made an appeal to the students: 'Don't be afraid of failing'. And indeed one should not be afraid. You have to get back to normal. Really."
