On 28 August 2021, the newspaper “Il Giorno” publishes the reflections developed by the Legal Representative of the Paritaria School S. Freud, Dr. Daniele Nappo, on the theme of “Cyberbullying”, on the page dedicated to him weekly, “Piazza Lombardia”.
Studies show that 35% of adolescents have suffered attacks conducive to electronic bullying at least once.
Hence the important contribution of the School, in promoting media education, with reference to the critical understanding of the media, and promoting cyberbullying prevention projects.
Cyberbullying Even the school must stop it
Cyber bullying is a constantly increasing phenomenon and very difficult to contain: the 'bully', in fact, acts undisturbed through the Internet with the digital identity that changes at will.
Research indicates that over 90% of adolescents in Italy are internet users and 98% of these claim to have at least one social network profile.
Often the very young use the network without any control by adults. In the age of technology and social media, young people constantly connected to the internet are growing: the young people of the new millennium generation do not distinguish their virtual existence online from the real offline one, they live in the same dimension giving the same importance to the two levels, one 'false', the other actual. Important fact: among the victims less than a third talk about it with their parents for reasons of shame, fear of reproaches, coercion to silence.
The age group most affected is represented by children between 12 and 18 years. The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education, University and Research, indicates that 35% declare that they have suffered attacks leading to electronic bullying at least once. The main threat is among the school desks and it is therefore the school and the teachers who have to build targeted intervention and defense strategies. From 18 June 2017, a law against cyber bullying came into force which provides for an extension of controls on the web and a better involvement of schools which undoubtedly has the merit of considering this serious degenerative phenomenon a priority for educational policies.
A child who is a victim of cyberbullying can ask the manager of the site on which he was offended the obscuring of the material concerning him which must be removed within 48 hours. And each school has established the figure of the contact person for initiatives against cyber bullying who coordinates educational and information initiatives for a conscious use of the internet that avoids these distorting and disturbing behaviors.
In order to make a conscious use of digital technologies, however, it becomes increasingly necessary to promote media education, with reference to the critical understanding of the media, and to promote cyberbullying prevention projects.
This new reality challenges the school, as an educational agency, asking to teach young people the critical and conscious use of new languages and at the same time to carry out an important information, dissemination and knowledge activity to ensure correct behavior on the Net and prevent situations dangerous.
