On April 15, 2022, Dr. Daniele Nappo, legal director of the S. Freud Charter School, exposes his reflections in the national newspaper "Il Giorno" on how to deal with the great issue of war in modern society. In fact, it has become increasingly important to be able to sensitize pupils to current topics, making them approach these topics and provoking an educational debate.
“Just last year the Minister of Public Education had proposed the abolition of history as an exam subject. It is true that many young people seem disinterested in the past and in the big and small events that make us what we are. Yet today the war in Ukraine agitates students in the classrooms: they ask for information and insights and the history and geography teachers must help them understand more what is happening. The art. 11 of the Constitution states that Italy repudiates war. Certainly the international situation calls for more than the juridical and analytical commentary of a law article and on how Italy is positioned with respect to the war. Young people want to comment and have clarifications. We need to give answers not only during the moment dedicated to civic education. In recent days we have been talking about history. Many have spoken, especially those who know nothing about it, and not so much about history itself, a subject about which we are witnessing the most unusual comments. How much of the teaching of history about which perhaps students should express themselves first and then teachers. A formative effort is needed to bring history to be not only the account of great enterprises and disputes and of the characters who have been the protagonists, but a circumstance to link those events to the transformation of societies and communities. An effort that would probably make the subject less abstract and more interesting for those young people who up to now have felt out of the way, excluded from the very world in which they live. Students perceive an anguish, an even greater concern than in the period of Covid. There are times when it becomes difficult to teach these days, even just talking about the conflict. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, this absurd war, worries and it is unthinkable not to talk about it and the teacher must do it with a cultural and not an emotional language. Perhaps it is precisely the school that must try to make students experience reality as such, not through canonical study but by researching and analyzing information, trying to make a correct selection in the web world and developing a proper critical sense.
