IL GIORNO – COACH IN CLASSROOM AN IMPORTANT FIGURE – DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

On Friday 27 May 2022, Dr. Daniele Nappo, legal representative of the Private School S. Freud in Milan, expresses his reflections on the teacher in the classroom as a coach for the students. It starts from the famous story of the character Mentor of the Odyssey to arrive, through an acute analysis, to the present day.

“In the story of the Odyssey, Mentor was Ulysses's trusted friend and adviser, to whom the latter entrusted his son Telemachus to prepare him for life and for his future role as king.

The teacher - it is said - appears when the pupil is ready. Coaching is not identifiable in a single phase, but it is a real structured and methodical process. The coach-trainer, an expert figure, and who supports his student in achieving and guiding the set goals; this process at school is very relevant only if done in a team, studying the improvement of the child through his error. Today's students are fragile, more than in the past they need reference guides, those who help them achieve results with motivations by creating a study method that can be an incentive. The teacher-guide is someone who knows how to undertake a path without putting himself in a superior position,  but in a relationship of mutual trust, so that there are the conditions to assimilate new contents through patient listening and a good emotional "one to one" relationship creates mutual sume and helps the young person to grow in the school world and in that too of work. Everyone, probably, in his life had a real teacher. We certainly remember how we were supported by an expert person and how we felt improved through continuous feedback. This learning method focuses on the student's responsibility and freedom, with respect to the path of understanding, playing a didactic and relational role of coaching. The practice offers variety of times and new ways of knowing, of learning, giving answers to the different characteristics of each learner. Today's school, what we define as modern, needs reference figures who know how to adopt a relational method to ensure that their student develops knowledge and skills; Listening plays a fundamental role, and a basic tool for composing the teacher-young person relationship. The contemporary teacher knows how to communicate effectively and a fulfilling relationship, or roles with due responsibilities. This effective relationship becomes a support means to manage the development process and path. "
