Dr. Daniele Nappo, Legal Representative and founder of S. Freud Private School , turns the spotlight on debate: an active teaching methodology that helps to obtain a correct oral presentation mode as well as allowing you to create a moment of confrontation and growth.
Debate is an active teaching methodology for the teaching of disciplines tested and used in secondary school: two teams of students compete with each other in an argumentative challenge on a given content proposed by the teacher or chosen with the participants themselves. Debate means regulated debate, in fact it is a real experiment in debate that has very precise rules. The two teams confront each other on a topic and one of the two must support positions in favor of a specific thesis while the other has opposing positions. The topic is defined by the teacher together with the students. The pros team, i.e. those who have to present the positions in favor, has the burden of proof while the team of the cons brings the counter-arguments. To manage an argumentative activity of this type, it is necessary to have well-defined rules, which are shared by the teacher with the participants and which must be accepted and put into practice with great concentration because they will also be evaluated. The teacher is the guarantor, he is the judge, but once trained in the experience, a student can also take care of it. The figure and role of the teacher is central to designing this experience. Communicative and linguistic competence is strongly encouraged, because a precise deadline must be respected to present a thesis and to persuade the counterpart or the public. Active listening and a collaborative attitude are stimulated. The debate activity can be really evaluated, helping to experiment with the practice of argumentation, confrontation and to have a correct, relevant, effective and personal oral presentation mode. The debate, not in a spectacular way but as a moment of confrontation and mutual growth, involves, excites and enhances creativity and initiative.
