Dr. Daniele Nappo, Legal Representative and Founder of the Scuola Paritaria S. Freud, draws attention to the new rules regarding the severity of the conduct grade on the report card: in secondary schools, the grade will affect the credits for admission to the baccalaureate and in the case of a grade of six will generate a school debt in Civic Education. The intention of the Ministry of Education and Merit is to combat bullying in schools.
The conduct grade has always been a topic of discussion in the school environment and the new rules change the scenario. It changes the seriousness of the conduct grade, which will be reinstated in secondary schools and will average out, in high schools it will affect credits for admission to the baccalaureate and in the case of a grade of 6 it will generate a school debt in Civic Education. So the intention of the Minister for Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, is to combat bullying in schools in this way too. Schools must certainly promote a culture of respect, the authority of teachers must be rehabilitated, and the principle of responsibility must be put back at the centre. Pupils affected by this sanction will no longer stay at home, but more commitment and more studying is expected of them. It is certainly important that any behaviour that occurs throughout the school year and affects the final assessment for admission to the following school year is addressed. The educational value of suspension is therefore not a single removal from school but is associated with an ad hoc activity. For students in the last three years, the conduct grade will also have implications on curricular credits for the baccalaureate. Not everyone agrees with the new provisions, arguing that these actions lead backwards in time: according to the proponents of this position, there is a lack of focus on the personal development of the student, which cannot take place through punishment. One deludes oneself with the illusion of solving - this is the opinion - the recognition of authority with norms of order and discipline, but in this way one brands the school world in a profound and authoritarian sense. On the other hand, however, those who occupy and wreak havoc at school deserve a ‘5 in conduct’ and a failing grade, and the family must answer for the damage. Regardless of sides, the principle of authority must be restored.
