IL GIORNO-COMPULSORY SCHOOLING UNTIL THE AGE OF 18? IS ESSENTIAL--DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

7 ottobre 2022

The proposal to increase compulsory schooling to 18 can be the right investment for the younger generation.

In the pre-election phase, there was a return to the topic of education and culture, and it was done with the thought of raising compulsory schooling to the age of 18. The proposal certainly has implications and conditions that cannot fail to take into account an updating of the education pathway. The school must regain a central place in our society, it must be considered as an educating community, and to change its structure one must observe and study all the implications that this entails. It is therefore necessary to be concerned about and plan in good time for useful choices for a complex system to function and act at its best. It takes consistency in action to bring to fruition a reform that is certainly necessary and undoubtedly positive. Raising compulsory schooling in a rapidly evolving and changing society is essential and indispensable because a certain number of years are required to earn a certain level of education, and each additional year of schooling yields a certain expansion of the body of knowledge. The level and need for education is growing more and more, so the duration of schooling needs to be increased. We live the knowledge society with the need for continuous education; raising compulsory schooling meets a concrete historical need. Today's students and tomorrow's citizens and their families know perfectly well and are aware of the increased need for education. So an increase would be the consequence of a sensible assessment, and several European countries have already adopted it. Raising compulsory schooling to 18 is smart to really invest in girls and boys. Compulsory schooling used to end at 14, then later it was raised to 16 and stopped there. The revitalization of our country, after the pandemic, depends above all on the ability to strengthen the school system. The new generations have to deal with the uncertainties of the future because we do not know what lies ahead, and here we have to be ready and strong to be able to act and respond in the next eventualities and unforeseen events through the ability to know how to react to extraordinary events. This strength we can find in education.
