In the age of globalisation, studying a foreign language, be it EU or non-EU, is today an essential factor of personal and educational growth for each student.
Alongside the communicative approach as the best teaching method available to the language teacher, it becomes of fundamental importance to invite students, right from the first years of secondary school, to take part in study trips to the countries whose language is being studied, since they represent a moment of true growth, allowing each student to literally immerse themselves in the life of the host country.
If the value of such a trip from an educational point of view in learning a foreign language is clear, even more surprising and gratifying are the benefits it brings in terms of a sense of independence, interpersonal relations and even self-esteem.
Living and cohabiting with a foreign family in a home that is not one's own certainly requires an ability to adapt that few students initially have, because right from the start it is necessary to change one's habits and lifestyle, from lunch and dinner times to the type of food, domestic and daily life habits
Necessarily, young people open up to a culture sometimes totally different from their own, discover the daily life of their host family, a city and even ways of life different from their own, gradually improving their ability to adapt to a different reality.
This is combined with the need to communicate using a language other than their own, to overcome shyness, perhaps to come to the aid of a friend or companion who is more insecure. In this way the children acquire responsible behaviour towards themselves, others and the environment; they establish interpersonal relationships of collaboration and friendship among themselves, also learning to respect shared rules.
Thanks to this wonderful experience, the children understand that they are citizens of the world and learn to look at ‘the different’ with new eyes and a different awareness. They enrich not only their own cultural background, but also their lives and their education.
