29 novembre 2023
On Nov. 30, 2023, some students will participate in the ARCHIMEDE GAMES - as part of the Mathematics Olympiad Project of the 2023/2024 school year.
CONTENTS, OBJECTIVES AND AIMS
The Math Olympiad is an elementary math problem-solving competition aimed at high school (secondary school) students. Participants must come up with creative techniques to solve never-before-seen problems and devise new demonstrations. The aim is to bring students closer to the kind of problem-solving that a professional mathematician encounters in his or her work, and to show them a different and more interesting kind of mathematics than one in which one has to mechanically apply formulas. In Italy, the various stages of the event are taken care of by the Italian Mathematical Union on behalf of the Ministry of Education. The Mathematics Olympiad has been held regularly in Italy since 1983, making it the oldest and most widely followed mathematics competition at the national level. As of 2017, about 1,500 Italian schools participate in the Math Olympiad Project, with a total of about 200,000 students participating in the first stage of the competition. The best six students go on to form the Italian team at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), which has been organized in a different nation every year since 1959 and has seen the participation of more than 100 nations.
CONTENT OF THE COMPETITION
The competition will be held in the morning of Thursday, November 30, 2023 and will last 100 minutes. As always, different tests will be offered for the two-year and three-year colleges, consisting in both cases of 16 multiple-choice problems (in different order of submission). It is also recommended to ensure the utmost seriousness in the conduct of the competition, making sure in particular that the work is carried out independently by each participant in an atmosphere of serenity and commitment, so that the relevant outcomes can be fully reliable. As a reminder, the use of any computing tools or communication devices (cell phones, tablets, computers, etc.), as well as tables, books or notes, will not be allowed during the test. Participants will only be allowed to use blank sheets of paper to carry out the problems and, if necessary, the necessities for drawing on paper (pens and pencils, ruler, compass, square).
