Autonomous cars available to the public, it is first time in the world Scuola Privata
Singapore beats the West to the punch and puts the world's first self-driving cab on the road. The innovation comes from nuTonomy, a company founded by two robotics experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and for now it is small in size: six robo-taxis, rising to 12 by the end of the year, are now available to some residents of a Singapore financial district, who can book a free ride via smartphone through the service's app. In the test phase, an engineer will be present in each car, ready to grab the steering wheel if needed. Tests of self-driving cars are being carried out by several U.S. entities including Google and Uber, as well as China's Baidu. However, the trial launched by nuTonomy in Singapore is the first in the world to open the doors of autonomous cars to the public.
The goal of nuTonomy, which is using Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicles, is to launch a fleet of robo-taxis by 2018. The data collected in this experimental phase will be used to refine autonomous driving software, which the company is also testing in Michigan and the United Kingdom in partnership with some automakers such as Jaguar Land Rover.
