IL GIORNO – STUDYING AND THE DANGER OF A MNEMONIC LEARNING – DOTT. DANIELE NAPPO

Dr. Daniele Nappo, Legal Representative as well as founder of S. Freud Private School, draws attention to the tendency of students not to properly organize their study load by memorizing topics. In doing so, they are unable to fully understand the concept studied and consequently fail to expound it correctly.

We are our memory and by it and because of it we function, think, speak, get excited, share and plan. Our ability to remember determines our decisions and composes our identity, which is why it is important to know how it works and to move away from the traditional conception of memory as a kind of precise record of events or data and instead see it as an articulated, evolving development that constitutes, maintains and retrieves memories. Learning by memory means remembering notions and data, but it does not necessarily mean understanding them: to assimilate them one must be able to process them again, so reasoning is required. Learning by rote skips many steps not allowing one to truly understand the text and remember it for a long time. Every student, at least once in his or her life, has relied on memory to try to repeat the copious study load verbatim. Then you get to the day of the question and, for all sorts of reasons, you get stuck. It lacks that one word to be able to resume the speech, and one by one all the words escape. Studying by rote wastes a lot of time and a lot of energy, and above all, it does not lead to any results. If we learn by rote we hardly really understand the concept: in order to remember we have to reason. Unfortunately, it often happens that in the absence of a good study method we resort precisely to learning by rote. On the contrary, an effective method is to make a selection of useful things, understand them with insights, rework them, and finally summarize. Organization is key. Scheduling your study load allows you not to arrive at the last with an excessive amount of work and to take the right amount of time to assimilate concepts.
