SUICIDE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE
by Misani Chiara and Nasisi Greta

MILAN, NOVEMBER 22--In Italy, it has been calculated that among the causes of death involving adolescents, there is a high percentage of suicides. But what are the motivations that drive young people to make this extreme gesture? Usually teens who end up taking their own lives send out calls for help in the days before. Most often these are incomprehensible signals, but usually those who are always with them can (or rather should) understand them.

THE SIGNS... Most of these signs include abnormal attitudes, e.g., self-harm. In addition, there may be situations in which the youth exhibits characteristically extreme attitudes, such as overreactions or a sudden drop in academic performance. In extreme cases, these are young people with depression disorders, who most often fall into the drug tunnel.

THE PHENOMENES...
Very serious phenomena are making their way among the very young. Mass attitudes that are dangerous for everyone, but especially for those who are living a difficult time.
Until a few months ago there was talk of another terrible practice involving steps up to and including death (Blue Whale Challenge). These phenomena are affecting a great many young people.
THE CAUSE... The main questions being asked are “why?”, “what is going on in the minds of these young people?”. Well the answer to that is not there, since the triggers are not the same for everyone. But underlying there is a substantial lack of rules, of a solid foundation, and of a parent being a parent and not a friend. The teenager needs guidelines, rules, happiness but also sorrows. And that is why the parent has a duty to establish rules, which the child will strongly oppose and rebel against, but always with the knowledge that he or she has someone next to him or her who loves him or her.
Whereas in the past each member of the family had his or her own role, duties and rights, today there is no longer any boundary line.
