THE SOX EXPERIMENT IN GRAN SASSO: "LE IENE" MUST STAY AWAY FROM SCIENCE!
by the student of 5^ year of ICT address Milanesi L. – IFS “Le Ultime di Sigmund”
On November 21, 2017, “Le Iene” because of their ignorance in the scientific field were about to shut down the SOX experiment taking place in Gran Sasso. Already from the title of the broadcast (“A dangerous nuclear experiment kept hidden”) they demonstrated their lack of knowledge about it, since SOX does not involve the use of a nuclear reactor (so no fusion or fissions); moreover, this experiment has been made public, but FOR YEARS you can go and read what it involves.Freud Computer School Milan
Very simply, this experiment involves the search for an elementary subatomic particle (the sterile neutrinos), thanks to the most sophisticated neutrino detector in the world: the Borexino. The generator to be installed underneath Borexino consists of a radioactive source, and this is what “the Hyenas” relied on, who at the mere hearing of the word “radioactivity” immediately linked it to the topic of nuclear power and the accident that occurred in Fukushima (on March 11, 2011), Japan. Ignoring the fact that the source (containing the radioactive element Cerium-144) is enclosed in a series of fully sealed copper capsules, which in turn are enclosed in a steel cylinder, which in turn is enclosed in a large tungsten shell more than 19 centimeters thick. The entire system for shielding the generator weighs more than 2 tons and ensures a reduction of radioactivity by about a trillion times
This structure is completely earthquake-proof and one has heat resistance up to 1500 degrees. In addition, the substance used (Cerium-144) has a radioactivity of no more than 5.5 petabecquerels (PBq). To explain further, it has nothing to do with the material leaked from Chernobyl, which possessed radioactivity of several thousand PBq, or Fukushima, whose material reached 500 PBq. In addition, the thermal power that will be generated by the reactor is a million times less than that of a nuclear reactor.
This news has created quite a bit of unrest, not only among the Abruzzi population living in the vicinity of Gran Sasso, but also at the political level. In fact, the productive activities committee of Abruzzo's regional council approved a resolution by the 5-Star Movement, namely, “to put in place all the necessary actions to interrupt and definitively stop the experiment.”
Rightly so, INFN researchers and experts in the field explained that the Gran Sasso laboratories' first goal is to run their experiments as safely as possible, mainly for two important reasons: the first is that failure to protect public health would deprive them of funding for subsequent experiments; and the second is that it is crucial that there be no radioactive leakage in the SOX experiment. SOX is one of the most important particle physics experiments in Italy, as well as around the world; it should be a matter of national pride instead of trying to sabotage it through fake news and notions. Unfortunately, in today's world, a TV program is put in the foreground instead of a scientific experiment of such importance.
