The teaching of Civic Education in schools has been reintroduced. It is a fundamental subject for knowing the rights and duties of every citizen. It is also a valuable aid for students to become active citizens.
On September 5, 2019, the law reintroducing the teaching of civic education in schools officially came into effect. In recent years, interest has increasingly shifted to the promotion of citizenship education, especially to defend fundamental values including peace, equality and human rights about which Europe has been grappling for some time. We live in a delicate time, made up of uncertainties and marked by adolescents' fragility and insecurities. The school must educate in citizenship, respect for rules, inclusion, and acceptance: an important activity that should not be limited only to the subject. Educating for citizenship, that is, should be understood as helping students in schools of all levels so that they can become active, informed and responsible citizens. We need to activate at school an evolution of civic education that involves different areas and accustoms students to peace education, culture of differences, conflict management, sustainable development, health and so on with the aim and purpose of making them disciplinary knowledge. At school, the Constitution, which includes knowledge and reflection on the meaning of daily living, respecting the rules, sustainable development, without limiting to the environmental theme, must be dealt with; space must be devoted to Digital Citizenship with special reference to the skills of consciously and responsibly using virtual media. Creativity, social and ethnic plurality, the spirit of innovation as open-mindedness and cosmopolitan vision must be taught to our children. The reformulation of idea of civic education and citizenship must walk in school through the acceptance of a cross-curricular view to plan curricular paths in which all classroom teachers, both those engaged in specific programs and individuals grappling with their own disciplines. The goal is to be able to integrate knowledge and activities to the main ideas of citizenship education. In secondary education, interacting effectively and constructively with others paves the way for the ability to behave in a socially responsible manner. Thus, civic citizenship education should not only be considered in school, but as a combination of conventional and informal learning throughout life.
